  • .Net support (i.e. recognition of elements, GUI and otherwise) - a MUST (the higher recognition rate, the better!)
  • option to both record and script test cases (also how easy it is to maintain and modify recorded tests) and usefulness of any additional aide tools
  • availability of support from the provider or community
  • workforce familiarity with the tool
  • flexibility of verification mechanism (different verification points)
  • frameworks for keyword and data-driven testing
  • ease of maintaining test cases (if small changes to GUI occur, do I need to rewrite code?)
  • web application testing
  • support for manual tests
  • availability of test and bug managers, trackers, etc that work with the product
  • sharing of test resources (such as test cases)
  • interoperability (if we choose to use with virtual test labs)
  • integration with Microsoft VSTS
  • integration into the development environment (Microsoft Visual Studio)
  • web service testing function (would be nice)

The solutions I have narrowed it down to are:

  • CompuWare TestPartner
  • HP Mercury QuickTest Pro
  • AutomatedQA TestComplete
  • IBM Rational Robot
  • Borland SilkTest
