What is security testing?

Def#1:

A process used to determine that the security features of a system are
implemented as designed and that they are adequate for a proposed
application environment. This process includes hands-on functional
testing, penetration testing, and verification. See also: Functional

Techniques used to confirm the design and/or operational
effectiveness of security controls implemented within a system.
Examples: Attack and penetration studies to determine whether adequate
controls have been implemented to prevent breach of system controls and
