software performance testing is used to determine the speed or effectiveness of a computer, network, software program or device. This process can involve quantitative tests done in a lab, such as measuring the response time or the number of MIPS (millions of instructions per second) at which a system functions.

Most of these use tools like Load Runner.

Performance testing is testing that is performed, from one perspective, to determine how fast some aspect of a system performs under a particular workload. It can also serve to validate and verify other quality attributes of the system, such as scalability, reliability and resource usage.

A load test is the simplest form of performance testing which is usually conducted to understand the behavior of the application under a specific expected load. This load can be the expected concurrent number of users on the application performing a specific number of transaction within the set duration. This test will give out the response times of all the important business critical transactions.

Stress testing is normally used to break the application. Double the number of users are added to the application and the test is run again until the application breaks down. This kind of test is done to determine the application's robustness in times of extreme load and helps application administrators to determine if the application will perform sufficiently if the current load goes well above the expected load.

Outcome of peformance testing can be:

1. hit per second
2. throughput
3. Response time etc

A. Load, stress & Volume testing comes under performance testing.
Load Testing: to test the performance of the application by gradually
increasing the user loads.

Stress Testing: is to test the performance of the application and to find how/when the server break down or crashes down, and to make sure that it won't create any hazard.

Hi

Performance is used to check the response time of particular application, but why the testers are concentrating more on performance wise leaving the functionality.

To test any application we need some techniques to reduce the Testcases and reduce the work and effort of testers, find more defects as soon as possible, for that we have to go for the tool.

We have build a tool called <a href="http://TestersDesk.com">TestersDesk.com</a> which is good in both Test Design and Test Data Generation

I can give a good example to know the power of tool, In TestersDesk.com there is a feature called Size-based file Generator, this is used to generate different file size for testing purpose, to manually type the data of certain size it’s too difficult and looks like clerical job.

Size-Based file Generator is used to generate the Different file sizes for testing the download and uploading fields of different sizes.

It will be used in Naukri.com, Media players, etc

In Naukri.com different people will upload different file size of resume we don’t know exactly what is the maximum file size it will upload, for that we can’t create the different file sizes manually to check the maximum size of Naukri, to do this work within seconds this tool is very beneficial
Size-based File Generator generates windows batch files that can successively create files of the specified size and type.
This is also used when we are testing the media players like for checking the file size of songs.

Steps to be used Size-Based file Generator in TestersDesk.com

Give the detailed information to the tool about the file size and type of data to get
after that click on download results, the download result will give a batch file after running the batch file we will get the data which we have mentioned in the input and another interesting thing is the created scripts are windows batch files and therefore do not run on other Operating Systems. Also, if an 800 MB file is given as the test input the created windows batch file is as small as 4KB.
Steps for creating the file:
1) Provide the detailed inputs like file size and type of data
2) Click on download results
3) Generates the Batch file
4) Save the Batch file and run it
5) The output will generate with the input given.

Any more questions you are welcome to ask me.
