Topic: Performance testing /?

   Greetings, 

I am new to testing and this is the reason I am doing this project. 
I want to do various performance tests to compare windows xp and abuntu(linux) which I will be testing on the same system both installed on HDs. 
Any recomendation of a program/s I can use to test both OS and any ideas of test/s to perform would be greatly appreciated.
