according to my experience,

I am in a position to test 3 products, which have almost same functionality and appearance. (However the name of the application differs among themselves). So we have decided to use automation for not repeating the same way of testing.

When the application is stable you can go for automation. Most of the time regresstion testing is a good candidate for automation.

1. when we have to enter multiple values for the same action

2.whenwe want detail information from application eg gui attributes

or simply say when application is more complex

retesting is more then we have to for automation testing.

we will go to automation generally during retesting and regression testing.

The reasons are
1)The project has different modules (think 2) but the functinality is same/ Repetative tasks cannot performed very well
2) regression testing occurs in the application
3)the scope of testing is high
4)with in less time we have to do the projct
5)more human errors
6)application performance cannot be tested mannually
7)no accuracy
8)more human resources are required
