What is Two-factor authentication?

Def#1
Two-factor authentication is based on something a user knows (factor one) plus something the user has (factor two). In order to be authenticated during the challenge/response process, users must have this specific (private) information.

Def#2
Two-factor authentication provides a higher level of trust than passwords alone because it requires something a user knows, such as a password, as well as something that person has, such as a smart card or a token.

Def#3
This is a process controlling the authenticity of the users identity on the basis of the two following factors: Something You Know — for example, the user name and password. Something You Have – for example, the CD device.

Def#4
Two-factor authentication (T-FA) is an authentication protocol that requires two forms of authentication to access a system. This contrasts with traditional password authentication, which requires that a user only know a password to gain access to a system.
