It depends more on the company policy..
As far as I understand both are necesary.

Sanity Testing = Its a initial level testing that tests the basic functionality of the

application.

Smoke Testing - It checks the impact of the software on the hardware.

Hi,

    In every application smoke and sanity testing is nessaary.Because Test Engineer starts his Testing with samoke(or) sanity.It is basic functionality of apllication.before this testing developer conduct the Unit Testing.
