This type of testing is usualy done with external test equipment (to generate inputs and verify outputs). HW knowlage is usualy required (most testers I have met had EE eng. degree) and SW knowlage is at second place. Saying that, I have met a few Comp. Sc. that did realy good job at this but had a much loger learning curve. good luck
